Call of Duty 4 has again topped the most played list on xbox live. Here's an examination of some of the more popular and not so popular perks that players can use.

When it comes to choosing which perk to put into which slot, a number of considerations should be made i.e what’s the player’s style of play, what is the gametype and what map is being played? Here is a list of perks to choose from.

Martyrdom

Opting for the Martyrdom perk means the player will drop a grenade after being killed. It is a great perk for small maps and objective based game types such as Search and Destroy, Headquarters and Sabotage but must not be used on Hardcore game types as the risk of team killing is too high.

UAV Jammer

If the player selects the UAV Jammer they won’t show up on the enemy’s radar when they call in a UAV. It’s especially useful for sniping on Hardcore gametypes. In non-hardcore gametypes, however, players will still appear on radar when they shoot so for added stealth add a silencer to your weapon.

Deep Impact

The Deep Impact perk means the players bullets have deeper penetration allowing enemies to be shot whilst in cover. It is useful on larger urban maps such as Crash and Strike which have many good snipe spots. The one drawback of the Deep Impact perk is that it won’t penetrate sand bags.

Eavesdrop

This perk allows the player to listen in the other team’s game chat and it only works when close to the enemy. The Eavesdrop perk rarely comes into use.

Stopping Power

The Stopping Power perk gives bullets more damage and is the most commonly used perk in the game. Players unsure of what to put in their Perk slot 2 should opt for Stopping Power. Stopping power isn’t needed in Hardcore gametypes where players have decreased health.

Steady Aim

When a player is shooting from the hip (not aiming down sight) the Steady Aim perk increases accuracy. Steady Aim is a good perk for sub machine guns on small maps such as Vacant and Shipment and can be beneficial on Assault rifles with heavy recoil and muzzle climb such as the M14.

Bomb Squad

This perk allows you to see any explosive devices (such as C4 or Claymore mines) that have been planted by your opponents. It’s principally a defensive perk and is not really that useful unless a player is trying to complete all the C4 and Claymore challenges in the Barracks.

Bandolier

Bandolier will give the player extra ammo. This perk works well with weapons that have fewer bullets than others. Therefore the M14 and G3 benefit greatly from the use of this perk and players with a lower accuracy will also find Bandolier a useful perk.

3 Frag

The 3 Frag perk gives players the facility to carry three frag grenades instead of the usual one. This perk is useful on large open maps such as Bog.

Juggernaut

The Juggernaut perk gives the player more health but the downside is it takes the place of the Stopping Power perk.

Extreme conditioning

Extreme Conditioning allows the player to sprint for longer distances and is an underrated perk. On Tactical gametypes such as Domination and Headquarters this perk can be the difference between winning and losing. Players should use this perk to beat the enemy to the key position.

Iron Lung

Iron Lung is used only with sniper rifles and allows the player to steady his shot for a longer amount of time. It is very useful on snipe friendly maps such as Bog and Crossfire and players can also increase their Sniping efficiency by learning the location of glitches.

Dead Silence

The Dead Silence Perk allows players move without making a sound and the best use for this perk is on Tactical gametypes with no respawns such as Hardcore Search and Destroy.

Sleight of Hand

Sleight of Hand gives the player faster reloads and Light Machine Guns (M60, M249 SAW and RPD) with huge clips benefit most from this perk. The Sleight of Hand perk also works well with the semi automatic shot gun which only has a 4 shot clip.

All the above perks are unlockable the more the game is played and beginner players can use the pre set class system that’s used in games such as Battlefield if the choice is too daunting.
