Punch-Out Sequel Comes to the Nintendo Wii
Glass Joe, King Hippo and More are Back!
With the popularity and widespread installed base of the Nintendo Wii, the series will finally make its return to a Nintendo console with a new game. The release date expected to be sometime in early 2009.
Punch-Out!! Features King Hippo, Other Old Boxers
So far, confirmed characters for the game from the original Nintendo classic Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! include:
- the aging German fighter Von Kaiser;
- the embarrassingly bad Glass Joe;
- ... and the massively overweight King Hippo with his infamous weak spot.
The new main character in the game looks a bit like a cross between Little Mac of the original "Punch-Out!!" and the character from the sequel with his curly hair and more muscled appearance but his name has not been revealed yet for the Wii version of the game.

It is not yet known exactly how the game will control on the Wii but speculation is that gamers will be able to play with both the Wii classic style by waving the controller through the air and shadow boxing or by flipping the controller and playing it like the classic Nintendo version of "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" players can find on the Wii's virtual console for download.
The Nintendo Wii game Wii Boxing has already seen the light of day as one of the mini-games in the ever-popular Wii Sports series and the game was well-received by both the hardcore video game-playing media members and casual players who typically don't play a whole lot of video games.
That control scheme, which features players swining away like mad in front of the TV screen using the nunchuk and Wii-mote, should be a good blueprint for the Punch-Out!! development team to use as they work to fine-tune the game for an audience who is expecting a whole lot from one of Nintendo's most revered retro franchises.
Mike Tyson will not be making an appearance in the new Punch-Out!! game for the Nintendo Wii, especially considering the fact that he now appears a little overweight (some might even say fat). This was evidenced by his appearance at the Spike TV video game awards.
Punch-Out!! for Wii Release Date
While the release date is not yet known officially, Nintendo fans have been waiting to get their hands on a new Punch-Out!! game for years.
The graphics are cel-shaded and cartoony and the fighters are larger-than-life much like in the original Nintendo version of the game to give the player a David vs. Goliath type of feel that's absent in other boxing games.
The Punch-Out!! series has always been about fun and humor over realism as well as strategy and all of those elements should be present when the new Wii version's release date comes about in early 2009.
