Fixing and repairing a broken screen that has experienced dead pixels, cracks and spider webbed cracks.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld gaming console created by Sony Entertainment. The PSP features a large viewing screen that is fragile and can become damaged if not handled properly. The screen can scratch easily from exposure to sharp objects.

Sending the device into Sony or a local repair shop may cost over $100 to fix. However, for under $20, a new faceplate can be purchased to have the PSP looking like new again.

Signs of a Broken Screen

There are several signs that a PSP screen may be broken and in need of a repair. The most common signs are:

  • Dead pixels (black dots and or lines on the screen)
  • Spider webbed or cracked screen
  • Areas of the screen are black

If your PSP experiences any of these symptoms, it can be quite annoying when the dead pixels, cracks and areas of black interfere with your game playing or video watching. It is best to replace the screen.

Items You’ll Need

The following items are needed to remove and replace a scratched PSP screen:

  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • Small flat head screwdriver
  • Replacement PSP screen

Replacement PSP screens may be purchased from numerous online sites including Amazon.com, Bizrate.com and eBay.com.

Steps to Replace Screen

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to remove and replace the scratched or cracked screen on your PSP:

  1. Remove the screws from PSP. There are a total of 7 screws. Turn the PSP over and remove the battery from its compartment. Remove the two exposed screws from the battery compartment and the two additional screws hidden under the “Warranty void if removed” sticker. You will find two more screws on the right hand side next to the memory card slot. One more screw can be found on the bottom side next to the serial number sticker.
  2. Flip the PSP over and pull from the bottom of the faceplate up to remove. The bottom will first disconnect and the top will then snap off.
  3. Remove the rubber pads covering the circle, triangle, square, x, and d-pad buttons. Remove the bottom black button strip.
  4. Remove the analog nub mechanism. There are two screws that hold this piece in place. Be careful with the plate – it will crack if twisted or mishandled.
  5. Replace the analog nub mechanism onto new faceplate and align and tighten screws. Replace the rubber pads and circle, triangle, square, x, and d-pad buttons back onto faceplate. Replace black button strip and insert the seven screws to the back of the PSP to tighten new faceplate.

Replacement PSP screens can be affordably purchased and easily attached to a PSP gaming console.
