The Ghostbusters series is to get a third installment in the form of a new video game with a whole new storyline to continue the franchise. Third in the SeriesIt has been reported on heavily by IGN and other gaming websites throughout its development. Although it looked as if the game might not even happen for a spell when it was dropped by its original developers, then game was finally confirmed to be released by Atari to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film’s theatrical release in 1984. In recent interviews, Ghostbusters co-creator, Dan Aykroyd has confirmed that the game is essentially, Ghostbusters 3. The storyline for the 3rd person action adventure title has been penned by the franchises creators, both Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, who portrayed Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler, respectively. The Story in Ghostbusters The game itself will see the player control the ‘new recruit’ to the Ghostbusters team, as they set out to save the world once again from the supernatural threat of Gozer. The spirit world comes into collision with the human world and all hell breaks loose. As the trainee taken up for testing Ray and Egon’s new experimental equipment, you must accompany the team as they clear up the spirit slime from New York City. The storyline has been reported to be in depth and interesting, especially enjoyable to any fans of the originals. Set two years after Ghostbusters 2, the city has seen a recent rise in paranormal activity. When the team investigates, they come to find that it is linked with the unveiling of the Gozer exhibit at the city museum. There is also a new love interest for Peter Venkman in the form of Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn, a Gozer expert. While most of the team has returned to voice their parts, Sigourney Weaver declined taking up her role as Dana Barrett for the video game. Rick Moranis also declined, having retired from acting and will not be reprising his role as Louis Tully. Ghostbusters: The Game From what has been reported so far, it would seem the game is looking spectacular. IGN have been delivering constant updates for excited fans. The developers have apparently gone all out to get the correct feel for the game. Every detail including how each character walked in the film has been recreated for the game using sensors on actors who have studied their parts intensely, even, so it has been said, down to Venkman’s slouch. The dialogue too has been tailored to each individual character, so that each response is exactly the sort of thing they might say in the situations they find themselves in throughout the game. Players will be able to use all the equipment seen in the films, plus some new ones. The character played is, after all, the ‘experimental equipment technician'. The game will see Ray being the player’s de-facto trainer for the game, as they battle spirits and specters across New York City. Encounters are said to include favourites such as Slimer, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Vigo, as well as Gozer and other entities from the film franchise. It has been reported that the player will also get to drive the ectomobile and enter the team’s firehouse. Most Ghostbusters games in the past have been deemed a failure, but if the recent reports on this one are accurate, the game looks to be stunning. It would seem there will finally be a title where a player can truly get the feel of strapping on a proton pack and busting some ghosts. Ghostbusters: The Game is scheduled for release on the 19th June 2009 on PS3 and Xbox 360.
