There are two different multiplayer map packs in the XBOX Live marketplace for Gears of War that are free. If price isn’t an option, there will be more to choose from, however this article focuses on the free.
Gears of War Multiplayer Map Pack 1
This multiplayer map pack was released in January of 2007, but many new buyers of the XBOX 360 may not be aware of it or the second pack release later that year. It is a 99 MB download that will expand the current scope of the game by adding in additional maps, or areas of play, to the game itself.
At such a small download size, many will still have room for it no matter the size of HD your box came with. There are two maps to this particular map pack; Raven Down and Old Bones. Keep in mind that this saves to the XBOX harddrive and not to the disk itself. This map pack was part of the Discovery Channel’s “Future Weapons” series promotion.
Gears of War Hidden Fronts Multiplayer Map Pack 2
This multiplayer map pack 2 was released in May of 2007 and is a larger download at 230 MB. Even at the larger size it is still smaller than some map packs (Halo 3’s pack is half a gig). There are four new maps to this pack; Bullet Marsh, Garden, Subway, and Process.
This will give varying styles of play more area to cover and will keep the game from becoming tired and stale. Keep in mind that this multiplayer map pack and the map pack 1 are both for the multiplayer aspect of the game and will not alter a single player game mode at all.
Game Information
Gears of War is rated M for Mature (for blood, gore, language, and violence) by the ESRB rating system, it is a Shooter genre game, made by Epic games and Microsoft. It is for one to four players, system link of two, and two to eight online.
In the multiplayer mode there are leaderboards and the voice system, so headphones can be used to increase gameplay experience. This is a great multiplayer game and a definite hit with the shooting genre players.
