Enchanters are one of the big three classes in Everquest. Warriors and Clerics each have their own rules, but this class controls where and how the battle flows. This unique casting class can use haste spells to cause other members of the group to kill faster, or clarity spells to increase the mana regeneration rate of the other spell casters in the group.
The most important thing to remember about enchanters is that they were not designed to be a solo class. They may be able to be replaced from time to time by the bard or in some cases the necromancer, but the play style this class requires differs greatly from the wizard or the mage.
A group wants three things from an enchanter: crowd control, haste, and clarity. Depending on the makeup of the group, the enchanter may have to slow monster attack speeds as well. Other players will make sure these spells are kept on them at all times,
Understanding crowd control is the most important part of leveling an enchanter while group. Other players must be aware of what mobs not to attack after the enchanter has mesmerized them, and they should know that area of effect spells will ruin the enchanter's efforts. If other players perform their group roles correctly, an enchanter can use mesmerization spells to keep monsters from attacking his group. When a mesmerization spell will not work, a charm spell will add to the group's damage per second. The enchanter will be attacked when the charm spell breaks.
Soloing is not the fastest enchanter leveling method, but a brief guide to the enchanter soloing techniques is helpful. Get a monster to attack you and have your pet attack it. This works well for leveling at the lower levels. When an enchanter gains access to the dire charm ability, he should charm a non-player character and use it for his pet instead.
The animated sword and shield enchanter pet is not as controllable as the pet of a magician. If the character has Journeyman's Boots, Spirit of Wolf, or some other item to raise his speed, charm kiting can be used to make the leveling process faster. The weaker armor and lower hitpoints for this class compared to the other class that uses frequently make charm kiting a risky tactic.
Dire charm makes aggro kiting easier. The pet control of an dire charmed pet is greater and monsters that are dire charmed hit harder than the enchanter summoned pets. An aggro kite only works if the enchanter can keep aggro off his pet. This can be obtained through a series of dots, nukes, stuns, and damage over time spells, although the enchanter should focus on using instant cast spells as much as possible.
Enchanters are one of the hardest classes to level up, and are highly dependent on groups to get to the highest levels. Their raid role may be little more than making sure the tanks have hastes and the spell casters have clarity, but the class is geared more towards people who enjoy small group situations.
