Everquest offers four options for melee classes to deal out high damage, the berserker class relies on its controlled rage to help his group and guild take down foes.
Berserkers in Everquest and the historical class of warriors have little in common with each other. The berserker gangs formed by the Germanic tribes and the Viking raiders of the Middle Ages were shock troops that used drugs and anger and had very little control over their actions in a berserker rage, the berserker class in Everquest relies on controlling its rage to wield 2-handed weapons to maximum effectiveness.
The berserker's damage per second rating falls slightly below that of of the monk, but the berserker class has a few extra utilities and can throw axes to snare a mob or weaken the enemies attack. The weaken ability of the berserker stacks with the magical spells used by casters that reduce an opponent's strength statistic.
After a player rolls the berserker character and choose his race, he will be given his first weapon and sent out into the world of Norrath. A person choosing to play a berserker for the first time should take the effort to learn about the class or an older player should refresh his memory if starting a new class. Berserker leveling is similar to the leveling process used by the monk and the rogue, but can summon axes to snare, stun, reduce the berserker's aggro and lower an opponents strength.
The berserker class is capable of tanking at lower levels and can take a few hits at higher levels, but a berserker that does not want to maintain the attention of the mob for long periods of time. Sometimes this means that a berserker should stop attacking, at other times he can use his ax throwing ability to reduce his position on a monster's hate list. The berserker's frenzy ability allows him to increases his damage per second rating. The duration of this ability increases as his level increases.
Berserkers gain levels most quickly in groups, but the access to a snare ability and another ability called intimidate makes it possible for members of the class to solo by fear kiting. The tactic used is the same method used by rogues, except that the first move of a leveling berserker in Everquest should be to snare the mob. Items, spells, or abilities that boost a character's running speed help every class when soloing.
Fear kiting reduces the damage a berserker takes when hunting to level up, but some damage is unavoidable. Downtime incurred by soloing can be reduced by using bandages with the first aid skill and having a regeneration item. Troll berserkers start with regeneration, but will benefit from items like the fungi tunic.
The rogue and wizard guide contain a list of suggested zones, although where to go is not as important to leveling a berserker as quickly in possible in Everquest as is getting a group. If a berserker can find groups, a member of this class can achieve raiding level in as little as 6 days played.
