The rather uninteresting teaser trailer downloadable from the Xbox Live Marketplace, lasts barely a minute and consists of mostly jungle-based warfare, beginning with soldiers negotiating a river crossing to the sound of a heartbeat and an ominous voiceover: “I’ve seen things that no training can prepare you for”.
The most remarkable detail in the trailer is the footage of a soldier using a flame thrower. It appears that in COD 5 players will now have the opportunity to incinerate their opponents. Although how useful this will be in practice remains to be seen.
The trailer also features a firing squad scene, some bloke in a ghillie suit on fire and numerous explosions. In one scene a plane crashes spectacularly into electricity cables. But the generally poor graphics and lack of gameplay footage make it a substandard teaser trailer which will surely leave gamers still speculating cynically about the quality of the finished game. Designers Treyarch have until November, when the game is set to be released, to fix things.
The trailer gave very little away in terms of what any of the new features might be. Will there be a 4-player Co-op Campaign and will they use a similar Perk system to COD 4? The trailer contains some tank footage so it would be fair to assume that vehicles will be included in COD 5. Many gamers complained about the lack of vehicle action in COD 4 and it’s likely they’ll be included in COD 5. Moreover the lack of Capture the Flag gametypes in COD 5 will most likely be addressed in the new game multiplayer.
Call of Duty 5 World At War is being made by Treyarch, the same people behind Call of Duty 3, and will be centred around the Pacific campaign of World War 2. This continues the franchise's tradition of switching between alternate designers Treyarch and Infinity Ward (COD 4). Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith confirmed in a recent interview that Treyarch will be using the same game engine as Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. They will also be using this engine for their forthcoming title Quantum of Solace.
Opinion is divided over Treyarch’s ability to do justice to the franchise after the disappointment of Call of Duty 3. What the new game will have on its side is the massive popularity of COD 4. With such a huge fan base now in place it’s almost guaranteed Call of Duty 5 World at War will be a best seller.
