Scrappers can be one of the most fun classes to play and level in City of Heroes, although the favorite of the author has always been the storm defender. They are the melee damage characters that fills the role of rogues in the more traditional high heroic fantasy mmorpgs.
The designers at Cryptic Studios who originally programmed the game created scrappers to give players a chance to play character similar to Wolverine, Batman, Spider Man, or Nightwing. The scrapper does not have the high hit points of the tanker, but his cool down times on his abilities are lower and his super powers do more damage to the enemy.
The group role of the scrapper is to let the tanker get aggro and pound on the mob, preferably without getting hit. Leveling a City of Heroes Scrapper is in a group or by soloing is easy. A player just has to know what to do to get to the end game, if that is his goal.
This scrapper's main purpose is to get into fights at close range. The power sets available to this archetype allow him to do damage quickly. One of the first choices a City of Heroes character must make his orgin and power sets. The orgins of a character affect the starting quests, but the picking a power type determines a characters ability and his play style.
The primary power set of a scrapper determines the play style that he will use through his career in Paragon City. A City of Heroes scrapper can choose from claws, dark melee, katana, broadswords, spines, and martial arts for his primary powers. The secondary choices are invulnerability, regeneration, dark armor and super reflexes as his secondary power set. The primary powers are offensive while the secondary powers are defensive. Regeneration is considered to be the best secondary power for soloing, while invulnerability and dark armor work better for grouping.
City of Heroes Scrapper Leveling via Grouping
The scrapper soloing methods are similar to those of the tanker, except he can go at a much faster pace. He can solo on the streets of Paragon city or take on the missions offered by his contacts as he progresses through the game. Scrapper leveling in City of Heroes goes only slightly more slowly while soloing than grouping, but grouping allows a scrapper to gain contacts that may be important later in the game or find the correct super group for him. This chracter archetype's group role is to do damage. He can best do this by trying to hit the the opponents of the groups while avoiding being hit him self.
The scrapper archetype is designed to be friendly to players who wish to gain levels by soloing, but a player should not spend all of his time in the game soloing. The point of a massively multi-player online game is to chat with people from many other areas that a player may or may not normally associate with, and grouping teaches a character the skills he or she will need later in the game.
